NIJ Study for Healthy Volunteers Ages 25-60
Protocol: STUDY00001952
Full Title
The effects of trauma exposure on neurophysiological, cognitive, and psychological function in active duty police officers
Description
We are looking for adults in two different groups for a research study: (1)Generally healthy adults ages 25-60 OR (2)Active duty police officers ages 25+. The purpose of this study is see how psychological and brain based processes are involved in decision making.

You will participate in this trial for one session which will take about 3 hours. During the session, you will complete questionnaires and have an EEG test (a painless test to measure brain waves). The study visit takes place at UB's South Campus.

Technical Description

A major emphasis of our proposal is to characterize the impact of PTSD symptomology on behavioral, psychological, and neurological indices of cognitive processes that are involved in rapid decision-making. The aims of the current application are, first, to test the hypothesis that impaired attentional/response control processes in PTSD are related to a dysregulation in neural processes, and that this dysregulation affects decision-making in police officers; second, to test the hypothesis that re-experiencing, alterations in cognition and mood, and alterations in arousal and reactivity symptom clusters will be related to the attentional/response-control dysregulation and aberrant neuronal pathway activation. The measures we will use are electrophysiology (Event-Related Potential, ERP); cognitive tests of attention and inhibitory function, and psychological tests of mood and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.
