Fuel Oxidation Patterns in Two Prolonged Load Carriage Conditions in the Heat
Hard physical work and intense exercise is heavily fueled by carbohydrates like bread and fruit. The goal of this study is to determine how fat and carbohydrates are burned while wearing a heavy pack and walking/fast running in the heat. Information from this study may directly affect nutrition and training recommendations for military and first responders.
Participants will be required to attend 5 study visits on the University at Buffalo’s South Campus Sherman Annex. The total time commitment for the study is 15 hours during which four tests will be performed. Two tests will occur in a temperate chamber set to 68 degrees Fahrenheit and two in a hot chamber set to 99 degrees Fahrenheit. Participants will wear a military-grade backpacks weighted to 30% of their body weight. They will be asked to walk on a motorized treadmill for up to 90 minutes and, in two of the four tests, perform 8 minutes of high-speed running in the middle of the 90-minute test. During the tests, participants will breathe into a tube that analyzes oxygen and carbon dioxide levels. In addition, core temperature, heart rate, and other variables will be monitored during the study for safety.
