Concussion Management Clinic and Research Center Registry of Patients with Concussion for Outcomes Research
A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury that may result in a variety of symptoms including headaches and vision, balance, cognitive or mood-related problems. Due to this wide range of symptoms, concussions may be difficult to diagnose and treat. The goal of this study is to create a registry of patients interested in participating in research so we can identify the best treatment approach to specific concussion presentation types.
Concussion are caused by traumatic force applied to the head, or elsewhere on the body that has force transmitted to the head, which results in a violent shaking of the brain resulting in sequelae of global microstructural pathological changes. Due to the widespread effects of the damage in the brain, concussions present with a very diverse set of somatic (headache, pain), cognitive, behavioral, vestibular or eye-related problems. The purpose of this research is to create an organized database of patients with concussion who provide consent to participate in outcomes research in the future for the diagnosis, management and clearance of concussion. Studies derived from well-designed and well-performed patient registries can provide a real-world view of clinical practice, patient outcomes, safety, and clinical, comparative, and cost-effectiveness, and can serve a number of evidence development and decision-making purposes. All future outcomes research projects will go through additional IRB review.
