This study enrolls adults and children ages 7+. The purpose of the study is to learn if an iPad based cognitive (thinking) test helps to identify changes in
how people think.
You will complete a set of cognitive tasks on an iPad over the span of about an hour. Some people will complete additional cognitive tasks, which take about 2-5 hours in total. If you are in this group, testing can be done over one or two testing sessions, based on what is convenient for you. These tests are non-invasive and safe for all participants. Study takes place at UB's South Campus in Buffalo, NY.
In this study, our primary objective will be to obtain normative data for cognitive tests that are part of the NeuroTrax Mobile App. The NeuroTrax Mobile App is an iPad-based cognitive assessment tool that will require approximately 20-30 minutes to administer (three tests in total). Study participants will complete three cognitive tests on the iPad, under direction and supervision from a test administrator. Participants will also complete a few paper and pencil/survey based tests in addition to the Mobile App test for validation purposes. We will be recruiting participants ranging from age 7 and up, as NeuroTrax is interested in obtaining normative data across a broad range of age categories. The ultimate goal is to accumulate these data in up to 248 subjects, spanning across multiple age bin categories, from 7-8 years, up through gt;80 years of age.
While we complete this primary data collection goal, there will be several other secondary study goals. For a subset of these subjects, we will collect electroencephalographic (EEG) data while participants complete several computerized cognitive tests that are part of our standard laboratory testing protocols. These subjects will also complete several additional paper and pencil tests of cognition and language performance. We plan to administer these additional measures in 60 subjects.
Another subset of participants will also complete additional cognitive testing using the computerized version of the NeuroTrax tests. The computerized NeuroTrax tests involves a complete battery of tests, and requires approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes of testing. This will allow us to determine whether the iPad NeuroTrax testing battery is a valid, shortened version of the more comprehensive computerized version of the NeuroTrax battery. Approximately 100 participants will complete this additional testing. We plan to only complete the additional testing in a subset of participants because this testing is more time and resource intensive, whereas the iPad based testing is less so.
We plan to use the Clinical and Transnational Research Institute Participant Registry to recruit adult-age participants. We will recruit children participants from a study registry that is housed in the UB Speech-Hearing and Language Clinic (normal children). We anticipate that we would require approximately one year to complete all of the participant testing.
