Using AI to Develop Discharge Summaries for Older Adults
Protocol: STUDY00009526
Full Title
Improving Geriatric Patient Safety at Hospital Discharge Using Patient-Friendly Artificial Intelligence-Modified Discharge Instructions (AIM-DI)
Description
When older adults leave the hospital, they take home discharge summaries. These summaries contain information about their hospital stay, treatment, and follow-up instructions. However, many discharge summaries contain medical terms that are difficult to understand. This can lead to confusion, medication mistakes, or even return visits to the hospital.

The University at Buffalo is running a new study on how artificial intelligence (AI) might help to write discharge summaries in plain language. The research team hopes to make discharge summaries clearer and more helpful for older patients.

Participants will attend a 2 – 4 hour in-person study visit. They will share their thoughts on the format and information included in the discharge summaries created by AI.

They will receive a $50 gift card.
