Diving Study for Healthy Adults
Protocol: STUDY00007661
Full Title
Managing ventilatory response and cerebrovascular reactivity to CO2 during immersion
The University at Buffalo (UB) Department of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences is looking for healthy adults to participate in an exercise study. The goal of this study is to learn more about how our lungs, heart, and brain respond to different diving situations. We hope to better understand why some people have a bad reaction to rising carbon dioxide levels during SCUBA dives. This may inform better diving and safety practices for SCUBA divers.

Participation involves completing 13 study visits on the UB South Campus (at Main Street and Bailey Avenue). These visits will take between 1 – 5 hours to complete. During these visits, participants will breathe into a mouthpiece to measure carbon dioxide levels while sitting in warm, neutral, or cold water. Participants will also complete 16 at-home training sessions that will take about 30 minutes to complete. They will earn $15/hour for each study visit and an extra $50 for completing almost all at-home training sessions.
