Protocol Submission

Where Should I submit My Research Protocol?

Proposals will be reviewed based on the nature of the research to be conducted and not on one's affiliation with a particular school or faculty. For example, a psychological study employing drugs will be reviewed by the Health Sciences IRB. Surveys performed in medically-related disciplines may be reviewed by the Social & Behavioral Sciences IRB. Health-related protocols involving minors will be reviewed by the Children & Youth IRB while non-medical protocols studying youth would fall within the purview of the Social & Behavioral Sciences IRB. For protocols including both minors and adults and for other protocols where you are not certain which IRB is appropriate, please contact the IRBs directly with your questions.

If your protocol involves:

  • drugs or
  • devices or
  • invasive medical interventions or
  • retrospective/prospective chart review?
  • and involves minors - submit to Children & Youth IRB
  • and involves adults - submit to Health Sciences IRB
  • involves minors and adults - call either IRB

If your protocol involves:

  • surveys or
  • interviews or
  • observational studies or
  • non-invasive research or
  • research on individual or group characteristics or
  • research on behavior, such as perception, language, cultural beliefs, cognition?
  • submit to Social & Behavioral Sciences IRB
