UB Human Research Protection Program
The UB Human Research Protection Program endeavors to ensure that the rights and well-being of research volunteers are protected to the greatest extent possible following the dictum of the World Medical Organization: "In research on man, the interest of science and society should never take precedence over considerations related to the well-being of the subject." The program is fully accredited by the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP) meeting standards of excellence that exceed federal requirements.

- Children & Youth IRB

The Children & Youth Institutional Review Board (CYIRB) reviews research proposals received from UB investigators involving the health and well being of children. The CYIRB principally strives to ensure that the dignity and rights of the research subjects will be protected while also assuring that federal regulations will be fulfilled. Research may not commence without CYIRB approval.
- Health Sciences IRB

The HSIRB reviews biomedical projects, which primarily involve adults, based on the nature of the research to be conducted and not on the investigator’s affiliation with a particular school or facility – for example, a psychological project employing drugs will be reviewed by the HSIRB.

Duties
Provide investigators with appropriate information to facilitate the ethical conduct of research and review submissions for completeness of materials, adherence to institutional policies, procedures and federal regulations.

The use of animal subjects in scientific and educational activities is governed by professional standards of ethical conduct as well as by federal and state regulations which reflect the concerns of society for their humane treatment. UB's Animal Care Program and Laboratory Animal Facilities are fully accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) - the highest standard in animal care.
