STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES
for
HAZARDOUS WASTE DISPOSAL
- Purpose:
This procedure outlines handling of hazardous waste.
- Scope:
This procedure applies to all veterinary or investigator staff disposing of hazardous waste.
- Procedure:
- Hazardous wastes are disposed of according to the type of material.
- Infectious materials are autoclaved and incinerated.
- Toxic wastes are properly contained and processed for disposal according to University regulations.
- Contaminated biologicals are autoclaved and incinerated
- Radioactive wastes are properly contained and processed for disposal according to regulations of the University Radiation Protection Services.
- Regulated medical waste is properly packaged and disposed of according to University policies and procedures.
- Steps to dispose of regulated medical waste:
- Call the Medical Waste Coordinator, Marlice (829-2120) Room 252 BEB to arrange to have waste storage room unlocked (Receiving room).
- Fill out labels (found in room) with CM-LAF account number.
- Weigh each container.
- Pack containers in box.
- Label box as Comparative MedicineLaboratory Animal Facilities and cumulative weight of containers. Tape box shut.
- Charge sheets will be made out for individual investigators with number of containers and weights.
