STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES for QUARANTINE OF PIGS
COMPARATIVE MEDICINE LABRATORY ANIMAL FACILITIES
- Purpose:
This procedure outlines quarantine of pigs purchased from conventional (non-SPF) sources.
- Scope:
This procedure applies to all CMLAF staff and principal investigators using pigs from conventional (non-SPF) sources.
- Procedure:
- All conventional pigs will be purchased from WBB Farm LLC.
- Pigs purchases from WBB Farm LLC will be provided with the following prior to shipment:
- Vaccination for Erysepelas, Parvovirus, Leptospirosis, Rotavirus, Clostridum perfringes Type C, and Escherichia coli.
- Deworming with ivermectin at weaning and then twice a year.
- All pigs will be examined and treated upon arrival by the Veterinarian or Veterinary technician:
- Pigs should be examined for: lice or other ectoparasites, signs of respiratory disease (coughing, ocular or nasal discharge, dyspnea), diarrhea, cleft palate, umbilical or inguinal hernias, skin infections, ear infections, lamenesses, or foot problems.
- Minor non-infectious problems will be treated.
- Sick pigs, or pigs with evidence of infectious disease will be rejected. Rejected pigs will be reported promptly to the Purchasing Agent. Pigs found to be in distress will be evaluated by the veterinarian, and will be treated immediately or euthanized and replaced by the vendor.
- All pigs will be treated for lice. Pigs will be dusted with Coral (coumaphos) upon arrival and 2 weeks later.
- All pigs will be treated for endoparasites with 1% ivermectin for injection. Pigs will be treated with 0.3 mg/kg ivermectin SQ or IM upon arrival and 2 weeks later.
- The Veterinary technician will complete the front page and physical exam section of the Animal Health Record (see attached) for each pig and submit it to the veterinarian for approval at the end of the quarantine period.
- Quarantine:
- Pigs in quarantine should be housed separately from other pigs.
- Pigs used in acute studies are quarantined for 24 hours.
- Pigs used in chronic studies are quarantined for 3 days.
- All animals will be observed daily by the Laboratory Animal Caretaker. The Caretaker will complete the Quarantine: Treatments/Observations portion of the Animal Health Record. If any problems or signs of illness are observed, the Caretaker will complete an Animal Report Form (see attached) and turn it into the Veterinary technician’s office located in BEB room 204.
- The Laboratory Animal Caretaker will weigh all newly arrived pigs and record their weight on their cage card.
- Unweaned pigs must be used the same day that they arrive. If the piglet is not used that same day, it must be returned to the farm. If the piglet must stay overnight, the Investigator will be responsible for the care and nursing of the piglet. The Investigator must have a statement in his/her protocol as to how the piglet will be care dor, and have it approved by the IACUC. All unweaned piglets housed overnight must have the approval of the veterinarian as outlined in SOP 1.B.2.
- Newly weaned pigs must be fed the same food as they received at the vendor to prevent gastrointestinal problems. They will then be transitioned to standard feed as outlined in SOP 1.B.29.
- Acquisition of pigs from non-approved sources:
- Acquisition of pigs from non-approved sources or other institutions must be authorized by the Veterinarian prior to ordering of the animals.
- Unexpected arrival of animals from non-approved vendors or other sources may result in special quarantine, isolation, or euthanasia.
- Any costs associated with this must be paid by the Investigator.
