- CM-LAF Summary Statement
The Division of Comparative Medicine and Laboratory Animal Facilities (CM-LAF) at the State University of New York at Buffalo (University at Buffalo) is a centralized service organization responsible for the animal care and use program campus wide. The CM/LAF's primary mission is to support research and teaching using animals at the University at Buffalo and affiliated institutions.
Modern and fully equipped animal facilities are located at the north and south campuses, and the Research Institute on Addictions. They are certified at the highest level by the American Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International, AAALAC International, and include general animal housing for more than 13 species of research animals; high security barrier housing for pathogen free animals and for genetic altered animals; procedure rooms for use by researchers; four operating theaters for sterile surgery; two surgical training areas; comprehensive equipment for gas anesthesia and anesthesia monitoring; a radiological suite for diagnostic X-ray; a pharmacy for sourcing and dispensing routine preparations as well as scheduled drugs; a clinical pathology laboratory for blood counts; biochemistry and other diagnostic tests; a conference room for training and researcher meetings; and an air conditioned vehicle for animal transport.
CM-LAF has a board certified veterinary specialist in Comparative Medicine, a clinical veterinarian, two veterinary residents in a training program accredited by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine, three certified veterinary technicians, 24 experienced animal caretakers and four administrative personnel.
CM-LAF staff are available to assist researchers who are involved in a wide range of cutting edge biomedical research with the development and writing of their research protocol, with the discussion of the protocol at the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) review sessions, with the setting up of the anima related procedures, with the methodology of the research and with the completion of the research in minimum time. (General Technical Support.)
By law, the use of animals, alive or dead, or any part of an animal has to be approved by the IACUC. CM-LAF staff supports the IACUC by assisting in the protocol review process and by advising the IACUC on current laws and regulations.
CM-LAF provides three training courses per year, which are mandatory for personnel involved in animal use.
