This is a notification to inform all Investigators that the Division of Comparative Medicine and Laboratory Animal Facilities (CMLAF) will be adjusting per diem rates in 2008. The new rates are based on an extensive analysis that was recently conducted on the costs associated with the care, feeding, and housing of animals at UB. This cost accounting exercise was required to derive accurate assessments of the true costs associated with each species, based on figures from the last 2 fiscal years This exercise had not been conducted in over 10 years and was required by administration to calculate per diem rates based on actual operating costs rather than by comparison to rates from other similar institutions.
The analysis concluded that our current rates are much lower than actual costs, and as a result the per diem rates will increase (or decrease for some species) 3% each year until rates are re-adjusted to meet actual operating costs. The changes will take effect on July 1, 2008 at the beginning of the next fiscal year. It should be noted, that per diem rates have not changed since July 1, 2005.
To help in future planning, you will find a chart on the website under “FEES” that illustrates the animal care per diem rates projected over the next 3 fiscal years.
The CMLAF is committed to provide optimal support to researchers at the lowest possible cost; however, periodic adjustments are necessary to offset increases in operating costs.
