Week 1 (Feb 8):


Overview of NSF programs. Organization and areas supported; NSF-wide priority areas; Specific solicitations; Funding for interdisciplinary topics; Interagency collaborations; Future directions. Doing your homework and making contacts before submission of proposals. Sources of information.

Week 2 (Feb 15):


Proposal writing. Review criteria; Research ideas; Preliminary data; Conservative versus innovative/high risk proposals. Budget preparation.: Mechanics, what to ask for; budget justification; cost sharing (Dr. Charles Kaars, Sponsored Programs).

Week 3 (Feb 22):


Examples of successful proposal strategies. Presentations by several successful 'junior' grantees, in various fields. Regular and CAREER Awards.

Week 4 (March 1):


Mock review panels at The Center For Tomorrow (complete program). Registration required to attend this session:

  1. Computing and Information Sciences (CISE) mock panel. Chair Dr. Russ Miller.
  2. Biological and environmental sciences mock panel. Chair Dr. Joseph Gardella.
  3. Q&A session and "share your reviews" in Chemical and thermal systems (CTS), Materials Research.

Week 5 (March 8):


Special mechanisms and other programs. Centers (ERCs, I/UCRCs); Instrumentation (MRI, ILI); Liaison with industry (GOALI); Small business (SBIR/STTR); Interdisciplinary groups; Exploratory (SGER); Creativity Awards; International; Education and training. Invited speaker Dr. Lance Haworth, NSF.
