What are the benefits to inventors for inventing, properly disclosing technology and maintaining proper notebooks?  What is involved in the patenting process?  What is the interrelation between publishing and patenting?

 

Bob received a Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering with honors from Rochester Institute of Technology in 1979, where he was elected to Tau Beta Pi, a national engineering honor society.  He received a Juris Doctor degree from State University of New York at Buffalo Law School in 1987. Bob has practiced intellectual property law for thirteen years, and has represented the Research Foundation of State University of New York in patent matters during his entire practice.  Now a partner in the firm of Simpson, Simpson & Snyder, L.L.P., he represents individual clients, small and large corporations and universities.  His practice comprises patent, trademark, copyright, trade secret and unfair competition law.  His patent and trademark practice includes counseling, searching and opinions, and the preparation and prosecution of patent and trademark applications, foreign and domestic.

Mike was the former Manager of Eveready Battery Company’s Technical Information Center.  He has in-depth knowledge and experience in business analysis research, database searching, and competitive intelligence analysis in various technical, product and patent assignments.  At Competitive Technologies, Inc., he was Director of Information Resources.  He earned his B.S. in Chemistry and M.L.S. in Information and Library Studies, both from the University of Buffalo.  Mike is a member of the Society of Competitive Intelligence Professionals, the National Association of Patent Practitioners, the Patent Information Users' Group, and the Association of University Technology Managers.  Mike is also a native of Western New York and a graduate of Clarence Central High School. First Principals, Inc. (FPI) is a service-oriented technology transfer firm founded in 1998 by former executives of Competitive Technologies, Inc. of Fairfield, Connecticut.

 

 

Licensing:

Presented by Jerry L. McGuire, Director - UB Technology Transfer & Licensing

What is a Win-Win situation? What does it take to get the deal?  As the inventor, how will you be involved in the negotiations?  What is important to the licensees?  What steps are included, and how long will it take?  When will you get a check?

 

Jerry has worked for over 30 years in technology transfer, licensing and international marketing. Prior to joining the UB team, he spent over 25 years at Westinghouse Electric Corp, where he was responsible for licensing agreements with over 150 licensees in 45 countries. He also established agreements with over 700 sales representatives worldwide.  Jerry received both a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering and an M.B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh.  Jerry is a member of The Association of University Technology Managers and The Licensing Executive Society.

 

 

Center for Applied Biomedical and Bioengineering Technologies (CABET)

Presented by Dr. Robert Genco, Distinguished Professor and Chair,

UB Department of Oral Biology

 

The University at Buffalo and Roswell Park Cancer Institute are joint recipients of a New York State grant to support university/industry collaboration in research, education, and technology transfer. The goal of this program is to accelerate the commercialization of new technology with the creation of new high-tech jobs and opportunities in

New York State.

 

Dr. Genco has worked for over two decades on laboratory and clinical studies, which have helped in understanding the causes, prevention, and treatment of oral diseases including caries and periodontal disease.  A 1963 cum laude graduate of the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Dentistry, Dr. Genco completed his residency in Periodontics and received a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Pennsylvania.  He is the Director of the Buffalo Periodontal Disease Research Center and is a member of many professional organizations. He served as President of the American Association for Dental Research and the International Association for Dental Research, and was awarded the Gold Medal for Excellence in Research by the American Dental Association.

44 inventors at the University of Buffalo received 16 patents in 2000. 

These inventors will be honored in an annual awards presentation.

 

In 2000, the Technology Advisory Panels (TAP) were initiated.  These panels were formed to assist and advise the Office of Technology Transfer & Licensing in evaluating the technical merit and value of the broad array of UB inventions.  The Panel members will be recognized for their commitment to improving the quality of New Technology Disclosures.

 

This will be an opportunity to meet and mingle with UB inventors and Development Professionals. Refreshments will be served.
