American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009

Opportunities for New Research Awards: Economic Stimulus

On February 17, 2009 President Obama signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009. The Act provides in principle over $16B in new research funds to various federal funding agencies, e.g., the NIH, NSF, DOE, NASA and others. This presents UB and all research institutions with unprecedented opportunities for increased federal of support. Indeed, federal agencies are formulating plans to make rather quick awards to research institutions. The directors of some of these agencies have strongly emphasized that the awards of these funds will not be done as usual, i.e., it will not be business conducted in their traditional way, and the process will have to be closely linked with specific rules which are still being worked out between the agencies and the White House.

In order to communicate current information to the research community, Vice President José hosted two town hall style meetings on Wednesday, February 25, 2009.

Implementation of the Act is quickly evolving, as federal agencies continue their planning efforts to make rapid and responsible awards to research institutions. Please continue to check this website for updates which the Office of the Vice President for Research will continuously refresh and upload as information becomes available or is revised.
